Privacy Policy
MealPlanatic · Last updated: October 11, 2026
MealPlanatic helps you plan meals, track your pantry, build grocery lists, compare store prices, and discover
recipes. This policy explains what we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. We do not sell your
personal information and we do not show third-party ads in the app.
Information we collect
-
Account (Supabase Auth): email address, display name, and password (stored and authenticated by
Supabase). You can sign in with email and password.
-
Profile: optional profile photo, home ZIP, household size, and dietary notes you enter.
-
Kitchen data: pantry items, recipes you save, meal plans, grocery lists, and Smart Shop saved
stores — synced to your account when you are signed in.
-
Guest use (signed out): if you browse without an account, pantry, grocery, recipes, and meal
plan data are stored locally on your device only until you sign in or clear site data.
-
Location for store search: ZIP code and coordinates you save for nearby store search, or
approximate location if you allow device location permission. We do not track your location continuously in the
background.
-
Photos you upload: optional pantry shelf photos, Smart Shop shelf-tag photos, and profile
avatars.
-
Community prices: store deals and prices you submit may be shown to other shoppers (without
requiring your name after account deletion — see Retention).
-
Scan corrections (text only): when you edit items after a photo scan, we may log anonymous,
text-only correction data (item names and categories) to improve recognition. This log does not include your
photos.
-
Diagnostics: basic error and usage information needed to operate and secure the service.
-
Usage log (signed-in accounts): a record of actions you take in the app, such as opening
it, saving a scan, ticking a grocery item, marking a meal as made, opening or closing one of Forky's tips,
or starting a purchase. Each entry holds the name of the action, the time, whether you used the web or
a phone app, and at most a number or a short label (for example which tip, or how many items). It does not
hold item or recipe names, what you type to Forky, photos, or your location. We use it to see which
features help, to make Forky's tips less repetitive, and to show you your own activity. We do not use it for
advertising and do not share it with anyone except Supabase, which stores it for us. Entries are deleted
after 13 months. If you browse without an account, nothing is added to this log.
How we use information
- Sync your kitchen data across devices when you sign in.
- Rank recipes against your pantry and build your grocery list.
- Search online recipes through our RecipeAPI proxy when you use recipe discovery.
- Find stores and compare prices near your saved ZIP, including Kroger deal data when available.
-
Run AI photo scanning: images you choose to scan are sent to Google Gemini (via
our Supabase Edge Function) to detect pantry items or read shelf tags. We keep a count of how many scans and
recipe imports your account has used each month, and the size of the scans, to apply plan limits; the counts
hold nothing from the photos, links or recipes.
So that a scan sent twice by a dropped connection is read only once, the list of items found by a scan is
held on our server for up to one hour, then deleted.
-
Read a grocery receipt you choose to scan: the receipt photo is sent to Google Gemini (via our
Supabase Edge Function) to list the food items you bought, so they can be added to your pantry and ticked off
your grocery list. A receipt can also show the store, the date, and part of a card or loyalty number. We ask
for the food items only and do not save anything else from it, and we do not keep the receipt photo. You can
cover or crop anything you do not want to send.
-
When you import a recipe from a link, we send that URL (and for some sites, page text, a social
caption you paste, or a YouTube video reference processed by URL only — we do not download or store the video)
to Google Gemini to extract recipe details for your private collection. YouTube channel names are refreshed about
every 30 days.
-
When you scan a recipe photo, upload a screenshot, or upload a saved
cooking video for import, those files are sent to Google Gemini to extract a recipe for your private
collection. Uploaded import videos are stored briefly in your private Supabase folder, then
deleted as soon as processing finishes (or if processing fails). We do not add imported recipes
to a public shared library.
-
Answer questions you type to Ask Forky, our AI helper: your question, the last few messages of
that chat, the names, amounts and use-by dates of items in your pantry, a short list of recipe titles, and a
few facts about your household that the app works out from your own activity (your household size, the names
of items you buy regularly, and the titles of meals you recently marked as made) are
sent to Anthropic (the maker of the Claude AI model, via our Supabase Edge Function) to write
the answer. We do not send your name, email, photos, or your dietary and allergy settings, and we do not store your questions or Forky's answers
on our servers; we keep only a count of messages and their size.
- Provide nutrition information where available (including USDA-sourced data served through our backend).
- Let you add meals to Google Calendar or download .ics files — we open a
calendar link or file; we do not read or modify your Google Calendar account.
Photo storage and training
-
Scan photos (private): pantry and shelf-tag photos you scan are stored in private Supabase
storage tied to your account. Only you can access them. We delete these files on a rolling basis after about
30 days, and when you delete your account.
-
Training photos (opt-in, off by default): in Kitchen preferences you can choose to share scan
photos for scanner improvement. When enabled, copies go to a separate private admin-only bucket used only for
tuning recognition — not for advertising.
-
Profile photo: if you add one, it is stored at a web address that is not listed anywhere
but can be opened by anyone who has that address. Remove or replace it in Account at any time.
Service providers
We use Supabase (database, authentication, file storage, and server functions) to host and process
your data. Photo scanning uses Google Gemini only when you start a scan. Ask Forky uses Anthropic only when you send him a question. Recipe search uses
RecipeAPI.io through our proxy. Store deals may use Kroger APIs where configured.
Nutrition data may include USDA sources via our backend. These providers process data on our
instructions to run the app.
Recipe videos come from YouTube. MealPlanatic uses YouTube API Services to list each
creator's videos and to find a video when you import a recipe; our server makes those requests, and they
carry nothing about you. The preview pictures load from YouTube straight to your device, and tapping a video
opens it on YouTube, so YouTube (a Google service) receives a request from your device and may set cookies
or show ads there. Google's privacy policy is at
google.com/policies/privacy.
Classic recipes are loaded by your device directly from TheMealDB. It receives the request
from your device, including the recipe category or the words you search for and, when we match recipes to
what you have, the name of an ingredient. We do not send it your name, email or account details.
Payments for paid plans are handled by Stripe. We do not see or store your full card
number. We keep a record of your subscription, its price and dates.
Retention and deletion
You can delete your account in the app (avatar → Account → Delete account) or on the web at
Account deletion page. That removes your
profile, pantry, meal plans, grocery lists, saved stores, personal recipes, usage log, auth account, and the scan photos and
profile photo tied to your account.
Deleting your account also cancels your paid plan. We keep billing records (your subscription, its price and
dates, and the renewal terms you agreed to) for as long as tax and consumer law require, even after you delete
your account. They are no longer linked to your profile.
Community store prices you reported may remain visible after deletion, but without your name or
account link.
Age
MealPlanatic is for adults. It is not intended for anyone under 18, and we do not knowingly collect their data.
If you believe someone under 18 has an account, email us and we will delete it.
